This dietary supplement contains vitamin D in 2000 international units per capsule, which is equivalent to 50 micrograms. This can be compared to the 10,000 IU that is achieved after approximately 20-30 minutes in strong sunlight.
Holistic D3-vitamin 2000 vegan contains Locvita™ vegan D3, which is extracted from 100% pine source for its cholecalciferol. It has the same chemical composition as traditional animal vitamin D3 and is formed naturally in the body when exposed to sunlight. This pine source, which is a type of loblolly pine ( Pinus taeda ) from the southeastern United States, is known for its ability to thrive in dry soil and its rapid growth, making it an ideal source for organic and GMO-free production of vitamin D3.
Vitamin D contributes, among other things, to the normal function of the immune system, muscles and bones, to the maintenance of normal teeth, normal absorption of calcium and phosphorus and to normal calcium levels in the blood.
WHY DO WE NEED VITAMIN D?
Vitamin D affects around 2000 genes and therefore has effects on almost all areas of our lives. We mainly get vitamin D through the sun's UVB rays, which convert cholesterol in the skin into a precursor of vitamin D called calciferol. This is then further converted in various steps in the liver and kidneys into the active form called calcitriol. In order for us to be able to form vitamin D in the skin, the sun needs to be at least 45 degrees above the horizon, which it only does during the summer months. This means that during the winter months the sun is too low for us in our northern latitudes to be able to form any vitamin D at all. Another thing to keep in mind is that during the summer months you have to expose bare skin to the sun's rays in order for vitamin D to be formed. If you have clothes that cover your skin, no vitamin D is formed. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin and the amount of vitamin D that you build up during the summer months is stored and used up during the winter months. Therefore, vitamin D levels are lowest in the spring before we can build up new levels of vitamin D. This also coincides with what is called seasonal depression.
We recommend that you supplement vitamin D with magnesium and vitamin K2. The reason is that all minerals and vitamins interact and are antagonists or synergists of each other. Here, vitamin K2 and magnesium are synergists, meaning that they help each other in their work. K2 prevents calcium from being stored in soft tissue such as the walls of blood vessels and is needed to store calcium in the skeleton.
